Hexy Stars Quilt and Tutorial

I have finally finished my Hexy Stars Quilt - woohoo!!!  This one was a trial of patience - but I loved the way it turned out.  It is made from six 60 degree diamonds pieced together to form stars, which then form hexagon blocks....hence "Hexy Stars."

I got the idea from this post on Crazy Mom Quilts, who got her inspiration from here.  I almost made 3 stars using this method, and realized that I just wasn't going to last that way!  A little too tedius for me.  (Even though I think it is amazing and I certainly admire the end result and patience!!!)  There is a Flickr group out there for these quilts, which you can visit to admire their work.

With all that inspiration, I decided to make one similar, BUT....machine-stitched instead.  It was still a very time consuming quilt - but well worth it!  I love this quilt!

Maybe it's because it took me soooo long to finish it, or maybe it is just because I have been wanting to make one for a while.  Not sure, but I like how it turned out regardless.

I added a large border to the sides to make the quilt bigger and like the way that turned out.  I debated on colors forever!  I was just going to do white, then gray, a double border.....but, I finally landed on this light teal fabric that I had in my stash.

I used a jelly roll of Innocent Crush by Anna Marie Horner for Free Spirit Fabrics.  (This jelly roll only had 22 strips, where the Moda jelly rolls normally have 40.)

For the background, I just used a solid white that I had on-hand.  The binding was a chocolate brown that I already had in my stash - which I think is old from RJR Fabrics.  And, the backing is Henna Garden in Teal by Sandi Henderson for Michael Miller.

My finished quilt measured approximately 55" x 60."  I wanted it to be at least lap size, which is why I added a border.  I had it quilted in a meandering design with variegated thread.

I decided to take photos along the way and post my first tutorial.  So here's how I did it in case you want to try your own.....
(Note: I am not an expert - and I'm sure there are probably better and more efficient ways to piece this together, but I thought I would share how I did it as a tutorial.)

Instructions are divided up into the following three parts:
Part 1 - Cutting and Piecing Stars
Part 2 - Forming the "Hexi-Stars"
Part 3 - Finishing the Top

Here's what you'll need to start:
1 Jelly Roll (I used a jelly roll with only 22 - 2.5" x WOF strips of fabric)
~2 yd White Background Fabric
Backing Fabric

What a great quilt!!  And, if you're up for a challenge - I think it is worthwhile!
